Inspect Lines and Outputs
Before you do anything, you’ll want to check your water lines and any outputs like sprinkler heads or irrigation outputs. In the time it has been dormant, the water lines could have been damaged by:
- Freezing
- Animal damage
- Ground shifts

Check Your Systems
After you’ve made sure that your water lines and water outputs are fine, you’ll want to do the same for your well and pump systems. Turn Your System On
If your well or irrigation system is primarily used for watering your crops or yard, it is likely it was switched off for the winter. Once you are sure that everything is in working order, it’s safe to turn the water back on and let it start flowing back through the pipes. Check any of your sprinkler heads or water flows to make certain that the water is coming out properly and the heads are angled where you want them — you don’t want to be watering your driveway or spaces where nothing is planted!
Set Up Irrigation Schedules
Plan a good watering schedule for your irrigation system to water your lawn and crops at regular intervals. This will all depend on what you are growing and how much water it needs. A good watering schedule will keep everything from drying out or becoming overwatered, so this is an important part of setting yourself up for the spring and summer!
